Atrius Health Expands Use of ArborMetrix Episode Analytics to a Total of 28 Surgical Specialty Procedures

Massachusetts Accountable Care Organization leverages EpisodeMetrix to validate clinical performance and cost of care improvements

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – June 19, 2014 ArborMetrix, Inc., a leading provider of real-time healthcare analytics, today announced that  Atrius Health, a large multi-specialty physician group practice dedicated to the improvement of care for its patients across eastern and central Massachusetts, has expanded the use of analytics in EpisodeMetrixTM from six to a total of 28 surgical specialty procedures.

Atrius Health will use the analytics within EpisodeMetrix to more rigorously explore medical care expenses and care variation around this focused set of high-volume acute episodes of specialty care. Atrius Health will leverage its all-payer claims database to examine the variations in episode care across hospitals and specialty providers within its risk-based care contracts.

Atrius Health has 37 internal medicine practices certified as Level 3 (the highest level possible) Patient-Centered Medical Homes by the National Committee for Quality Assurance and has attained HIMSS Level 7 recognition for its health informatics infrastructure. Atrius Health originally piloted ArborMetrix’s software in 2013 to test its performance analyzing clinical and cost variations for six orthopedic and cardiology acute episodes of care.

ArborMetrix’s software is now used by Atrius Health to analyze cost and variations in practice patterns for more than two dozen acute care surgical specialty episodes. It provides information Atrius Health needs to more fairly study and explore major drivers of clinical and medical expense variation and helps physicians define opportunities for improvement. Information on these drivers is provided based on surgical specialty, both by hospital and by surgeon; and physician and hospital outliers.

Atrius Health is one of 32 Medicare Pioneer ACOs selected by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) as leaders in coordinating care for patients across care settings. Medicare Pioneer ACOs participate in shared savings and losses with Medicare after meeting quality performance levels. The more that Pioneer ACOs are able to both improve outcomes and minimize and prevent avoidable or unnecessary expenses, the more they are eligible to earn. However, they also incur greater losses if they cannot both improve outcomes and decrease expense trends.

Surgeons Know Bad Surgeons When They See Them

Forbes  June 2, 2014:   …A study published earlier this year in the New England Journal of Medicine points towards a way of using surgical video that will not only improve how we measure the quality of surgical care, but may even help surgeons improve their operative technique. The study was conducted by Dr. John Birkmeyer, a gastric bypass surgeon at the University of Michigan as well as a researcher who studies the quality of surgical care. Birkmeyer and colleagues had twenty surgeons submit videotapes of themselves performing gastric bypass procedures.  He then had other gastric bypass surgeons watch the videos and judge the quality of each of surgeons’ technique.

Quality Institute to use EpisodeMetrix to increase transparency for consumers

PENNINGTON, NJ and ANN ARBOR, Mich. – June 3, 2014 – The New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute announced today that it has partnered with ArborMetrix, Inc., a leading provider of real-time healthcare analytics to identify and compare detailed information of both hospital cost and outcomes-based quality measurements.

The Quality Institute will use ArborMetrix’s EpisodeMetrix™ analytics platform to compare data from New Jersey, Philadelphia and New York City. The initial procedures under consideration for measurement include joint replacement, spine surgery, bariatric surgery, coronary artery bypass surgery, and coronary angioplasty and stents. The Institute plans to include additional conditions and procedures as part of future phases.

As the first regional initiative of its kind to analyze data on this scale, the Quality Institute will enable providers to analyze and determine areas of improvement in variation in patient care delivery. One place where the spirit of collaboration seems to be flourishing is Michigan, where the Michigan Value Collaborative (MVC) is providing decision support for hospital leaders using both claims and clinical data.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, the largest private payer in the state, has funded a longstanding program called Value Partnerships, which encompasses several different initiatives, including collaborative quality initiatives. Continuous quality improvement (CQI) addresses some of the most common, costly areas of surgical and medical care by facilitating collaboration between Michigan providers. National Market Demand for Performance Analytics for Surgical and Specialty Care Surging

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – February 10, 2013 ArborMetrix, Inc., a leading provider of real-time healthcare analytics, today announced that it has increased its Series B financing by $1.3 million to allow Renaissance Venture Capital Fund and Detroit Innovate to participate.

The earlier round of Series B financing, announced in July, was led by RPM Ventures (RPM) alongside existing investor Arboretum Ventures. Wolverine Venture Fund also participated in the earlier investment.

The latest investment will accelerate ArborMetrix’s national market expansion to meet surging demand for its proven real-time, risk-adjusted clinical performance analytics tools. ArborMetrix’s analytics enable healthcare providers and payers to improve the quality, safety and cost-effectiveness of surgical and other specialty care.

Speaker Bio

Dr. William B. Inabnet III is the Eugene W Friedman Professor of Surgery, Chief of Metabolic, Endocrine and Minimally Invasive Surgery and Surgical Director of the Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism Institute at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.  Dr. Inabnet attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he received his undergraduate and medical school education.  He completed his residency in general surgery with Dr. Richard Prinz at Rush Medical College and Rush-Presbyterian-St Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago, IL.  Dr Inabnet then completed a fellowship in endocrine surgery at Cochin Hospital in Paris, France where he trained under Professor Yves Chapuis, a world leader in the field of endocrine surgery and targeted parathyroidectomy.

An international authority in the field of minimally invasive endocrine surgery, Dr Inabnet has pioneered new techniques in minimal access endocrine neck surgery as well as adrenal and pancreatic surgery. In 1998, he helped perform the first endoscopic thyroid resection in the United States and has helped advance the field of video-endoscopic neck surgery. Dr. Inabnet is also a leader in the field of minimally invasive metabolic surgery with an interest in disorders of the endocrine system in obese patients, especially type 2 diabetes. Dr. Inabnet has participated in national and international clinical trials evaluating the role of gastrointestinal surgery in treating diabetes. He holds numerous leadership positions in the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons, American Association of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, the American College of Surgeons and the American Thyroid Association.

Dr. Inabnet has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, as well as 3 textbooks with 2 more under preparation. He lectures throughout the world and was inducted into the Southern Surgical Association, the American Surgical Association and French National Academy of Surgery, a rare honor for non-French surgeons.
