Atrius Health Expands Use of ArborMetrix Episode Analytics to a Total of 28 Surgical Specialty Procedures

By | News, Press Releases | No Comments

Massachusetts Accountable Care Organization leverages EpisodeMetrix to validate clinical performance and cost of care improvements

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – June 19, 2014 ArborMetrix, Inc., a leading provider of real-time healthcare analytics, today announced that  Atrius Health, a large multi-specialty physician group practice dedicated to the improvement of care for its patients across eastern and central Massachusetts, has expanded the use of analytics in EpisodeMetrixTM from six to a total of 28 surgical specialty procedures.

Atrius Health will use the analytics within EpisodeMetrix to more rigorously explore medical care expenses and care variation around this focused set of high-volume acute episodes of specialty care. Atrius Health will leverage its all-payer claims database to examine the variations in episode care across hospitals and specialty providers within its risk-based care contracts.

Atrius Health has 37 internal medicine practices certified as Level 3 (the highest level possible) Patient-Centered Medical Homes by the National Committee for Quality Assurance and has attained HIMSS Level 7 recognition for its health informatics infrastructure. Atrius Health originally piloted ArborMetrix’s software in 2013 to test its performance analyzing clinical and cost variations for six orthopedic and cardiology acute episodes of care.

“We are excited to leverage the acute care episode analytics in EpisodeMetrix to more rigorously and fairly explore medical expenses and care variation for these additional procedures,” said Joe Kimura, MD, MPH, the Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Atrius Health. “Following our pilot program for cardiology and orthopedic surgical specialties, we recognized the potential for ArborMetrix’s episode analytics to be an important complement to the population-based, total medical expense analytics already in use across Atrius Health.”

ArborMetrix’s software is now used by Atrius Health to analyze cost and variations in practice patterns for more than two dozen acute care surgical specialty episodes. It provides information Atrius Health needs to more fairly study and explore major drivers of clinical and medical expense variation and helps physicians define opportunities for improvement. Information on these drivers is provided based on surgical specialty, both by hospital and by surgeon; and physician and hospital outliers.

Atrius Health is one of 32 Medicare Pioneer ACOs selected by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) as leaders in coordinating care for patients across care settings. Medicare Pioneer ACOs participate in shared savings and losses with Medicare after meeting quality performance levels. The more that Pioneer ACOs are able to both improve outcomes and minimize and prevent avoidable or unnecessary expenses, the more they are eligible to earn. However, they also incur greater losses if they cannot both improve outcomes and decrease expense trends.

“Atrius Health continues to be a thought leader in accountable care,” said Brett Furst, ArborMetrix’s CEO. “Our early insight suggests that other ACOs will have the same if not even greater opportunities to reduce clinical variation within their own ecosystems.”

Dr. Birkmeyer: Skill can be measured, married to outcome

By | Articles, News | No Comments

June 5, 2014 By   ANN ARBOR, Mich.— Dr. John Birkmeyer is not only a practicing surgeon and health services researcher at the University of Michigan, but also the founder and chief scientific officer of ArborMetrix, a performance measurement platform that analyzes surgical videos. He brings this unique understanding of the research, policy, and practice behind what it takes to manage variations in acute-care cost and quality to his clients in the “real world” and now to ACO News.

ACO News: How have ACOs responded to the transitional challenges of value-based reimbursement?

John Birkmeyer: Health systems and ACO providers recognize the new business model of risk-based reimbursement and that to “bend the cost curve” they need to better manage the costliest right hand tail of patients and deal with spending that occurs during hospital stays. The priority has become managing the conditions of the chronically ill and affecting better-coordinated care to keep them out of the hospitals. The problem is that nobody has identified the secret sauce for optimal models for care coordination.

Surgeons Know Bad Surgeons When They See Them

Forbes  June 2, 2014:   …A study published earlier this year in the New England Journal of Medicine points towards a way of using surgical video that will not only improve how we measure the quality of surgical care, but may even help surgeons improve their operative technique. The study was conducted by Dr. John Birkmeyer, a gastric bypass surgeon at the University of Michigan as well as a researcher who studies the quality of surgical care. Birkmeyer and colleagues had twenty surgeons submit videotapes of themselves performing gastric bypass procedures.  He then had other gastric bypass surgeons watch the videos and judge the quality of each of surgeons’ technique.

New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute Selects ArborMetrix Platform to Identify Variation in Cost and Quality of Care

By | News, Press Releases | No Comments

Quality Institute to use EpisodeMetrix to increase transparency for consumers

PENNINGTON, NJ and ANN ARBOR, Mich. – June 3, 2014 – The New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute announced today that it has partnered with ArborMetrix, Inc., a leading provider of real-time healthcare analytics to identify and compare detailed information of both hospital cost and outcomes-based quality measurements.

The Quality Institute will use ArborMetrix’s EpisodeMetrix™ analytics platform to compare data from New Jersey, Philadelphia and New York City. The initial procedures under consideration for measurement include joint replacement, spine surgery, bariatric surgery, coronary artery bypass surgery, and coronary angioplasty and stents. The Institute plans to include additional conditions and procedures as part of future phases.

As the first regional initiative of its kind to analyze data on this scale, the Quality Institute will enable providers to analyze and determine areas of improvement in variation in patient care delivery. Payers and employers will also gain a clearer picture of how care is delivered. The data will then be provided publicly to consumers who make the ultimate decision on their care selections.

“Consumers, purchasers, and other health care stakeholders across New Jersey look to the Quality Institute to help them make real and measurable improvements to our State’s health care system,” said Linda J. Schwimmer, Vice President for the Quality Institute. “ArborMetrix’s platform will provide a thought-provoking, phased approach to a new health care performance measurement system that will reduce unnecessary variation and increase transparency in both cost and quality of care for the citizens of New Jersey. Our goal is to ultimately give health care providers, employers and consumers actionable information

about the quality and cost of health care across the State. Armed with that information, they’ll make better informed decisions and drive improvements in quality and cost containment.”

Until now, Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) and other models to manage cost and quality for a population have only had limited ability to make decisions on both cost and quality together. The ArborMetrix platform is the first to provide clinical insights into data that help optimize specialty networks and referrals, reduce variation in acute care costs, manage full costs of episodes of care, monitor quality of specialty care, understand drivers of post-acute costs and succeed with bundled payments.

“As a large-scale purchaser of health care, it is critical that I get the best value in terms of quality and cost for my members,” said George Laufenberg, Administrative Manager of the Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters and a member of the Quality Institute’s Board of Directors. “We are hopeful that through this exciting new initiative, consumers will soon be able to get to a value equation in health care.”

As part of this initiative, ArborMetrix is providing analytics to identify variations that will enable the Quality Institute to validate data at the hospital level to share among purchasers, employers, hospitals and consumers. The ArborMetrix analytics platform and quality reporting system will compare risk-adjusted outcomes and utilization for clinical conditions that are:

  • Common
  • Costly
  • Associated with wide variations in prices
  • Often performed on an elective basis

The ArborMetrix platform will integrate and analyze critical and comprehensive clinical, administrative, financial and claims data from several public and private sources, not only in New Jersey, but also from New York City and Philadelphia, in order to determine variation within cost and actual payments.

With the information provided by ArborMetrix as a starting point, the Quality Institute will be able to engage other stakeholders – including purchasers and provider groups – with the goal of integrating fuller data sets about prices, episode payments and quality measures in the future.

“With this program, the Quality Institute will have the platform necessary to evaluate opportunities to provide better patient care across the specialty and acute care setting,” said Brett Furst, CEO of ArborMetrix. “These insights provide a comprehensive view of the variation in both cost and quality, enabling

consumers and employers to manage their networks to achieve the highest quality of care at the lowest cost.”
